Talk Shows

Talk shows are a worldwide phenomenon. First created shows in the USA, like The Late Night Show or The Oprah Winfrey Show, were pioneers in their time and they have influenced other producers all around the world to take the initiative and implement talk shows in their countries.

As far as I am concerned, the USA is one of the countries with more talk shows in the world. Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimmel, James Corden, and Ellen DeGeneres are, mainly, running the talk shows at this moment. Their ranking took-off years ago and they have kept the rankings up since then. In my view, their popularity can be justified if we observe how much effort producers put into the sections of the show and the natural charisma the presenters have. For these reasons, spectators still like this kind of show; the directors renew what they do on the show every few months, the producers bring household celebrities, writers work extremely hard to come up with funny scripts, and so on. We only see the shallow part: how the presenter says some puns, the audience laughs at them, the presenter interviews the guest, he does some funny things with them, and, then, the show of that night comes to an end. Talk shows have come a long way and they deserve the recognition all the shows are getting.

In Spain, more and more talk shows are being created. For instance, El Hormiguero has been around for, at least, fifteen years, yet, new shows like La Resistencia are breaking records of the audience, being watched by thousands of viewers every day. Nonetheless, someone might be wondering how they have got some much attention in such a short time. The answer is social media. The directors of these newly created shows have created massive campaigns of the promotions of the shows. They have bough street advertisement, advertising the show in all bus stops, uploading photos on Instagram hinting what the show might be about, but without completely spilling the beans, and, the best kind of advertisement that, in my opinion, is the reason these shows have truly taken off, is YouTube. YouTube has offered a lot of visibility to their videos. As an example, La Resistencia uploads parts of their interviews on this app. By doing this, many people have got to know this show and they have become fans of the show, establishing that way reliable fans and audience.

Personally, my favorite shows are The Ellen DeGeneres Show and The Late Late Night Show by James Corden. Both of them have a way around their guests that is appealing. James Corden is extremely charismatic, easy-going, he makes his guest comfortable and that shows when you watch the interview, and he can be subtle in some questions and others brutally honest. Apart from his personality, his sections have caught the attention of many viewers, including mine. Carpool Karaoke is his most famous one. He brings singers into his car, drives around the city, and, while he does that, they sing the songs the celebrity has launched. In reality, it is a win-win situation. Both, the presenter and the famous person promote what they want to show. Similar to James Corden, Ellen DeGeneres has built an army of fans that will support her no matter what. Nonetheless, these reliable fans and some other spectators have stopped watching her videos on account of the rumors that have surrounded her these past weeks. Ellen is a really funny woman, but, sometimes, rumors weigh more than fun.

In conclusion, Americans lead the creation of talk shows. Pioneer shows, such as Ellen DeGeneres have attracted many people to this kind of entertainment. In my opinion, as a fan of her show, she and James Corden are the funniest presenters of these days. From the creation of the shows on, more and more shows have been created, adapting the American ideas to the country's sense of humor. In Spain, shows like la Resistencia have used social media to boost their fame.
