Emotional intelligence

Emotional intelligence is an underrated issue to discuss at times like this. The best thing that could happen to you is knowing yourself to a deeper level. Understanding your emotions and the way you act is essential to solve everyday problems and that is what emotional intelligence helps you with.

This term allows you, overall, to get to know yourself better and, more specifically, your emotions. If you are facing a stressful day, the ordinary thing is to be sensitive to everything around you and have the emotions running high; or maybe your day takes an unexpected turn and, little things such as having your room messy, might shake you up. Nonetheless, you know beforehand you are going to react a certain way. It might be the case where you don’t know exactly how you will encounter the challenges ahead of you, yet you can do a self-assessment and consider how differently you can do things this time. Not only changing your behavior helps you in the present but also in the future when going through some ups and downs.

Personally speaking, getting to know me better has been a gift. Not being invited to a party when Covid times did not exist was something to get pissed off at. Nevertheless, with emotional intelligence, I could handle and cope with these things in a better way. I would coldly think about how to react when I saw those classmates and how to avoid conflict at all costs so that I didn’t end up harming myself mentally. In addition to this, if I was feeling down in the dumps, I would analyze why I was reacting that way and methods to change my sadness into happiness. It might sound like something childish to do, but it is nothing farther from the truth.

Apart from it being extremely useful, what I lack is the spread of the message. Teaching the world it is okay to be in good spirits but also to be feeling under the weather is a truth not many people have the pleasure to know. Therefore, more talks should be done in order to raise awareness in regards to this topic. Many people would agree, just like other talks that are given in high schools, that this issue would enlighten teenagers that are going through a rough period of their lives. Bearing in mind this thought, the addition of speeches given by experts in education facilities should be considered a priority. Moreover, with the pandemic, people are having more mental breakdowns than ever. By showing them how to control their emotions, maybe cases of anxiety and insomnia would cease to appear.

In conclusion, emotional intelligence, even though it is not thought to be something crucial in our lives, should be considered essential. Adepts at this issue should fight for the chance to show the world how important it is to know ourselves.
