Techniques to plan your writing

In this post, I will be showing examples of three techniques to help you organize your writing. The chosen topic is semi-bilingual parents.

1. Freewriting
The text I have written is related to the topic but I have just written it without stopping to think. Maybe some ideas are not relevant and maybe others are. That is why I have underlined some sentences, to stand out those that I consider relevant to include in my writing.

Semibilingual parents are not something that we usually hear here in Spain. That is because there are not many people who actually know how to speak more than one language fluently or, in case one of them knows how to speak two languages, they won’t teach the children just for the fact that that thought doesn’t cross their mind. Maybe they don’t feel prepared or as it is not encouraged in Spain to do so they don’t think about it. Not only have they have to think in themselves but also in the child they are going to have. They have to consider all possibilities. It might happen that the kid doesn’t want to learn that language or that he isn’t as good at learning languages as the parents thought. There are lots of aspects to consider and this issue should not be taken lightly. They have to think thoroughly about their future and in case they decide to go ahead with it, they have to plan everything beforehand.

2. Mapping
This technique consists of drawing a circle in the centre, the main topic, and from there start thinking of other ideas and start drawing branches from the main circle that are related to the topic.

3. Questions
Think of all the questions you might have about the topic. Some of my questions are:
- When would they start teaching?
- What language would they focus on?
- When the child grows up, would they stop speaking one language?
- What are their mother tongues?
Would the parents make the kid learn a third language?
