Realfooding

What exactly is realfooding? It is a movement created by Carlos Ríos, nutritionist and lifestyle advisor, that consists of basing your diet on healthy food. It has nothing to do with vegetarianism or with being vegan but it has some similarities when it comes to what to eat.

Its principle is consuming food that has not been ultra-processed or that has only been processed with non-damaging preservatives. Needless to say, it is recommended not to eat junk food or eating it only three times per month so that its effects do not have negative consequences on our immune system.

How do we distinguish what is ultra-processed from what is not? Fortunately, we have different methods to achieve our goal. One way to do it is by the app Carlos Ríos and his team invented. It directly tells you whether a food is ultra-processed, processed, or if it is completely healthy. In the app, there are several sections in which they tell you why it is that kind of food: if it shows you it is ultra-processed maybe it is because it is high on sugar or salt or that the preservatives it contains are extremely harmful to our body or, if its is processed food, it might be on account of some kind of element that is not as good to our body as it should be but consuming it won’t have any damaging outcome. The second method to know if what you are about to eat is beneficial or not is by manually looking into the labels of the products that you are going to buy. This way is more old-fashioned just for the fact that the app automatically does all the tiring jobs although, if you want to acquire something and it does not appear in the app, it always comes in handy the knowledge you have about the limits on preservatives.

Why would we get rid of our habit of happily eating junk food if we do not have immediate consequences? The answer is as simple as because, in the long run, we will have even deadly sequels that will leave us relying on medical gadgets to keep us alive. No one sane would ever give their child ten grams of sugar yet they are doing exactly that in only the breakfast: Nesquik or colacao go over the allowed sugar rate, then, some biscuits that have the exact same amount of sugar or more than the Nesquik or, if they have run out of biscuits some cereals are always useful, even though it is as if you were giving the kid three grams of sugar. Not only can sugar be found on those products but also more dangerous preservatives that will have terrible repercussions on that person. Parents have to think of the future of the child. Do they want an overweight child with health problems such as diabetes or cancer or do they want a healthy and lively kid that will live with less risk of having a cardiovascular problem? We all have to think in that sense in the future because if we do not do something now, when we realized we had to have done something, it will be too late to change. In addition to this, it has an important effect on mental health as well. It has been proved by many studies that people who have a bigger intake of ultra-processed food are more bound to suffer from depression or other mental issues because of the ingredients those products are made of.

Until now we have only outlined the negative results we get from those kinds of food. Therefore, we have to also mention the wonders real food does for us. Apart from living longer than the average, we have a boost in our energy and mood. Vegetables, fruits, fish, and so on produce endorphins that are the brain chemical that leave you feeling joyful and more relaxed. If you are normally tired when you wake up, when you start on realfooding, you will feel like a totally different person. You won’t be as grumpy as usual and you will have another point of view in facing the challenges in store for you.

This movement has truly changed lots of lives. Just by eating healthy and doing exercise some days per week, you will reach a point where, except for some days, you will be surprisingly blissful. That is what so many people long for and, with realfooding, you will fulfill the dream.
